Collect for Good Friday
Presider: Let us pray. (A period of silence follows.)
Presider: O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who for us, your children, didst stretch forth your arms upon the cross: hear us from the throne of your glory, and grant that we, by the sacrifice of your body and blood, may be filled with your Holy Spirit, and so faithfully serve you, that we may come at last to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
John 19:28–30
After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfil the scripture), “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Keep Watch
Good Friday does not hurry. It does not rush toward brightness, nor speak too quickly of morning. It remains with the Crucified: with sorrow, with silence, with the wounded of the earth, and with all who cry out in abandonment, grief, and pain.
Stay here a while. Pray if you wish. Be still if you cannot pray. Let the solemnity of this day speak in its own language.
